Get your multi-engine Instrument Rating in well-equipped aircraft, in real instrument conditions and with instructors who are experienced commercial pilots. It’s a great place to fly and a great place to learn.
The multi-engine Instrument Rating qualifies you to fly cross country without visual reference to ground features in single and multi-engine aircraft. This may include flying in or on top of cloud, or at other times when visibility is reduced below visual flight minimums.
The course covers all of the necessary skills, knowledge and experience for the attainment of a CASA issued multi engine Instrument Rating including human factors, basic engineering to be able to operate aircraft systems, planning and conducting an IFR flight and performing instrument procedures including RNAV, ILS/LLZ, VOR and DME/GNSS arrivals. NDB approaches are an optional extra (see ‘Fees’ below).
The Instrument Rating provides opportunities to gain employment with companies conducting a range of operations including single-engine and multi-engine charter, airline operations, flight instruction, aero medical, military, search and rescue1.

On successful completion of the full course, students will attain an Instrument Rating with multi-engine aeroplane endorsement issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).
This course can be taken:
- full-time over 6 weeks (on average) 2
- or part-time on a flexible basis
Students can commence their training at any time of the year—subject to availability.
The course is a blend of flight training, simulator training, instructor briefings, and a flight test at the conclusion. The pace of learning and scheduling of lessons is tailored to each student’s availability and needs.
This rating course is best suited to pilots who:
- want to learn at a time and pace that best suits them
- are confident to study for the theory exam in their own time and do not wish to attend theory classes
- wish to attain the CASA rating, but not a corresponding vocational education qualification.
We recommend that students undertake and pass the Instrument Rating Theory Exam (IREX) before they commence flight training. There are no theory classes in this course and the exam itself is not included in this course. If theory classes are available during the period of your training you have the option to attend these at an additional cost.
CASA stipulates the following entry requirements for the Instrument Rating. Students must:
- hold a current Private or Commercial Pilot License with 50+ hours solo cross-country time
- hold a Class 1 or 2 Aviation Medical
- 5+ hours night flying experience (including 1 hour dual circuits and 1 hour solo circuits). This can be completed as part of this rating course with an additional 2 hours in a Cessna 172, at an additional cost.
The course is conducted in a multi engine aircraft and therefore students will either need to:
- have a Multi Engine Aircraft Class Rating
- or attain a a Multi Engine Aircraft Class Rating during their training. We can integrate this into your training for an additional fee.
